Her background is in Graphic Design and [live] animation. Over the past few years, Mariska de Groot developed an undercurrent fascination for straight forms, stroboscopic movement and analogue machines. As soon she came in contact with the principle of synthetic sound on film, she started her research on the history of optical sound and started to build cinematic ‘light-to-sound’ instruments and installations: moving form and light which create sound.
Mariska [1982, based in Berlin [DE] and Nijmegen [NL]] studied graphic design [Arnhem, 2000-2005] and ArtScience Mmus [2010-2012].
In 2009/2010, Mariska received a Startstipendium from Fonds BKVB. In 2011, she was nominated for the STRP Talent Pit and selected for the New Arrivals of Rewire Festival. In 2012, she won the BNG Workspace12 Projectprice and she received twice a project budget from Oddstream.
